Step 1: Get inspired by finished paddles
Start by looking through finished paddle photos to see shapes, layouts, letters, symbols, and design ideas before you build your own.
Tip: Save or screenshot the details you like so you can plan your paddle with more confidence.
Step 2: Pick your paddle shape and wood
Choose the 30" Big Bro Paddle Kit, or start with the 22" Wide Paddle Basic Pack for your Big Bro or your Big Sis. Select your organization, wood, and paddle shape from the drop-downs, then explore wreaths so you can decide if a Greek or open wreath belongs in your design.
Tip: If you're painting your paddle, Maple is a good place to start. If you're not painting, Oak gives you a darker wood look.
Step 3: Add names, family names, and lettering
Use Wood Letters for individual letters and Connected Letters for whole names in script. Type your words, choose your letter style, and pick the size that works best for your layout.
Tip: Smaller letters usually work better for longer text like family names, nicknames, and extra details. Larger letters work better for initials, short names, and words you want to stand out.
Step 4: Add symbols for the finishing touches
Choose symbols that help tell the story of your paddle. Our Symbols page includes mini symbols at about 1" tall, regular symbols at about 2" tall, and jumbo symbols at about 3" tall.
Tip: Choose your symbol size based on the space you have left after placing your paddle, wreath, and lettering.
